Grace Fryer

Grace Fryer (1899–1933) was an American factory worker who painted luminous watch dials for the United States Radium Corporation (USRC) in Orange, New Jersey. After suffering severe bone necrosis and tooth loss, she led the historic legal suit alongside four fellow workers against USRC to hold the company accountable. Despite that, unfortunately, her exposure to radium proved fatal, and she succumbed to radiation poisoning five years later at age 34.

About Ishani

Ishani is excited to return to theater as a part of this production of Radium Girls as Grace Fryer! Her previous credits include A Doll’s House and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. When not acting, she finds herself on stage with her school’s choir. She thanks her friends and family for their constant support and encouragement.

Played by Gugan Arumugam Karthigeyan

Arthur Roeder

Arthur Roeder (1884–1960) was the president of the United States Radium Corporation during the 1920s. He actively suppressed evidence regarding the toxicity of radium and denied responsibility for the illnesses afflicting his former factory workers, framing the company’s efforts as scientifically sound. After the landmark case in 1928, Roeder left USRC and later worked in executive roles in other industrial enterprises, including that of John D. Rockefeller, before his death.

About Gugan

Gugan is very excited to appear in Radium Girls. Having played Ralph Crane in The Book of Will, he’s excited to experiment with a new, more unique character. When he’s not in school, you’ll find him working a camera, watching BBC’s Planet Earth, or reading Harry Potter (he’s read it 32 times by now, he needs to stop.) Gugan wants to thank his Mom and Dad for encouraging him to audition, Ms. Russell, Mr. Garza, Mr. Szalkowski, and Carlos for all being such great show leaders, and his friends for helping him along the way.

Played by Saahas Motukuri

Edward Markley

Edward Anthony Markley (1891–1952) was the chief legal counsel for the United States Radium Corporation during the 1920s legal battles. He spearheaded USRC’s aggressive defense strategy, working to delay trial proceedings in hopes that the dying women would succumb before a verdict could be reached. Following the 1928 settlement, Markley continued his law practice in New Jersey, representing corporate interests throughout his remaining career.

Clerk

I'll have to go check what the Clerk actually does

About Saahas

Saahas is exhilarated to make his acting debut in International Academy East’s Radium Girls. As a senior at IAE, he is excited to take part in Radium Girls before he graduates. Outside of school, he enjoys reading, cooking, and playing video games. He would like to thank his loved ones for always being there for him.

C. B. "Charlie" Lee

Clarence Burton "Charlie" Lee (1887–1956) was a corporate executive and vice president at the United States Radium Corporation. He supported company policy in maintaining that radium dial painting was safe and helped manage internal operations while discounting early warnings of radiation sickness. After the public scandal forced restructuring at USRC, succeeding Arthur Roeder as president and serving in that role until at least 1938, Lee eventually faded from public life and spent his remaining years outside the national spotlight.

William J. A. Bailey

William J. A. Bailey (1884–1949) was an American entrepreneur and fraudster who created "Radithor," a patent medicine consisting of radium dissolved in water. He exploited the fad surrounding radium's health benefits, indirectly fueling the public perception that radium was harmless, a myth that hindered the dial painters' early plight. After wealthy industrialist Eben Byers died of radium poisoning from drinking Radithor in 1932, the FDA shut Bailey's business down; he later started new questionable ventures and died of bladder cancer years later.

Male Shopper

About Devraj

Dev is excited to be C. B. "Charlie" Lee (and everyone else) in Radium Girls, having previously acted as Ben Jonson in The Book of Will and Jesus/Carl Grubenierre in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! Offstage, he enjoys linguistics (again, he swears it’s just a hobby), playing the violin, and riding his bike! He thanks Ms. Russell for kindly requesting him to join the Drama Club, Mr. Garza for assisting him with learning how to be a part of the crew, and Gugan for the unwavering support and friendship, both on- and offstage!

Dr. Sabin Arnold von SochockyDr. Sabin Arnold von Sochocky
Dr. Frederick B. FlinnDr. Frederick B. Flinn
Mason ChiewMason Chiew
Played by Mason Chiew

Dr. Sabin Arnold von Sochocky

Dr. Sabin Arnold von Sochocky (1883–1928) was an Austrian-born physician and chemist who co-founded the Radium Luminous Material Corporation (later USRC) and invented the radioactive paint "Undark". He encouraged the "lip-pointing" technique used by the dial painters, unaware of or downplaying the long-term dangers. After contracting severe radiation poisoning himself and losing several fingers, von Sochocky assisted the Radium Girls by testifying on their behalf shortly before dying of aplastic anemia in November 1928.

Dr. Frederick B. Flinn

Dr. Frederick Bonner Flinn (1876–1957) was a toxicologist at Columbia University hired by USRC to conduct health evaluations on the factory workers. He fraudulently posed as a licensed medical doctor to examine Grace Fryer, issuing a clean bill of health and misrepresenting the dangers of radium exposure to shield USRC from liability. Despite his unethical role in the cover-up, Flinn maintained his academic position at Columbia for years afterward, continuing research in industrial hygiene.

About Mason

Mason is very excited to make his acting debut in International Academy East’s Radium Girls. He is a 12th grader at IAE. When he’s not in school, Mason enjoys playing the drums and video games. You’ll find him in the first violin section at the Symphony Oakland Youth Orchestra, as well as first chair violin in the IAE Symphony Orchestra. He wants to thank his Mom and Dad for always supporting him in his academic endeavors.

Kathryn SchaubKathryn Schaub
Annika RönmarkAnnika Rönmark
Played by Annika Rönmark

Kathryn Schaub

Kathryn Schaub (1902–1933) was an American dial painter and close friend and cousin to several factory workers, entering USRC at age 15. She joined Grace Fryer as one of the core five plaintiffs in the landmark 1928 lawsuit against USRC after developing jaw decay and severe physical symptoms. Schaub received part of the 1928 settlement, spent her remaining years advocating for medical assistance for radiation victims, and donated her body to science upon her death in 1933.

About Annika

Annika is so excited to be playing Kathryn Schaub in Radium Girls! When she first got the email that she and two of her best friends were going to be the three radium girls, she knew this was going to be one of her favorite roles yet. She’s sad that this will be her last show here, but is grateful to have had the best cast, crew, and director she could’ve asked for in her senior year! Enjoy the show!

Ishani SureshIshani Suresh
Played by Ishani Suresh

Irene Rudolph

Irene Rudolph (1902–1923) was a young dial painter at USRC's Orange, New Jersey plant and the cousin of Kathryn Schaub. She was among the earliest factory workers to fall gravely ill, suffering from painful jaw necrosis that puzzled contemporary physicians. Rudolph died in July 1923 at under 20 years old; her death served as one of the primary catalysts that prompted her fellow workers to investigate the link between their illness and radium.

About Ishani

Ishani is super excited to be partaking in her last play of high school! She has been a part of every school production thus far with her favorites being The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Diary of Anne Frank. She is also thrilled to play Irene Rudolph in Radium Girls where she and her actual best friends get to act as best friends on stage!

Played by Aarush Bhatt

Tom Kreider

Tom Kreider is Grace's boyfriend, who is a few years older than her. He is eager to marry her, encouraging her to run off with him, but Grace insists on waiting for a proper church wedding. While Tom is not historical himself, many of the Radium Girls had boyfriends or husbands, including a man named Tom F. Donohue, the husband of Catherine Wolfe Donohue (1903–1938).

Lovestruck Cowboy

About Aarush

Aarush is thrilled to be in this IAE Drama Club production of Radium Girls. As a senior, this final performance is bittersweet, with him having fond memories of past shows such as The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Diary of Anne Frank, and The Book of Will. He would like to thank his sister for her never-ending support.

Dr. Harrison MartlandDr. Harrison Martland
Lula LjuljdjurajLula Ljuljdjuraj
Played by Lula Ljuljdjuraj

Raymond Berry

Raymond Hirst Berry (1897–1971) was the New Jersey attorney who took on the case of Grace Fryer and the other four dial painters when no other lawyer would challenge USRC. He was 30 years of age at the time, almost 6 years younger than Markley, and had recently graduated from Yale Law School. Following the famous trial, Berry continued practicing law in New Jersey, gaining a reputation for taking on challenging civil litigation. From 1938, he worked for the Scott Lumber Company.

Dr. Harrison Martland

Dr. Harrison Stanford Martland (1883–1954) was the Chief Medical Examiner of Essex County, New Jersey. He conducted definitive autopsies on deceased dial painters, proving scientifically that inhaled and ingested radium settled in their bones, destroying tissue and causing fatal radiation sickness. Martland's scientific findings permanently disproved USRC's cover-up and led to widespread occupational health reforms; he spent the remainder of his career advancing forensic medicine.

About Lula

Lula is delighted to be acting in International Academy East’s spring production, Radium Girls. You may have seen her in past IA East productions such as Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Helen the Maid in A Doll’s House, Edith Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank, or backstage being a stage manager. She would like to thank her family and friends for their amazing and countless support.

Ella HeinzmanElla Heinzman
Played by Ella Heinzman

Katherine Wiley

Katherine Wiley was the Executive Director of the New Jersey Consumers League during the 1920s. She championed the cause of the dial painters, bringing widespread public attention to their plight, helping them find medical experts, and connecting them with attorney Raymond Berry. Following the lawsuit, Wiley continued her lifelong work as a labor reformer, advocating for workplace safety laws and women's rights in industry.

About Ella

Ella is super excited to act in this year's show, which is her second at IAE! She had a ton of fun during her first production, and can't wait to continue performing! She typically likes to listen to music, draw, or read in her free time. After the show, we're certain you could say this play was about good enough to kill a girl! Or… earn you about 15,000 dollars perhaps? (Check back for the reference after the show to test if you were listening…)

Saanvi RameswarapuSaanvi Rameswarapu
Played by Saanvi Rameswarapu

Sob Sister

Nancy Jane Harlan, nicknamed "Sob Sister," drives the tabloid media circus in the play, constantly pushing Grace Fryer to sell her tragedy as a front-page story. Her character nods to the sensationalist reporters of the 1920s who turned real-life medical horror into sensational human-interest stories to sell newspapers. While reporters like her exploited the women, serious press crusaders like New York World editor Walter Lippmann used actual investigative journalism to pressure the courts and call out corporate delay tactics.

Mrs. Fryer

Mrs. Fryer's real name, though frequently credited in theatre programs as Anna Fryer, was Grace Moulton Gilbert. Raising ten children in Orange, New Jersey, the real Mrs. Fryer was married to Daniel Edward Fryer, a local representative for the hatters' union whose labor background deeply influenced their home. The Fryer family's union roots provided vital support when Grace decided to sue USRC, standing by her through severe illness and intense local backlash.

Reporter

Jack Youngwood is a reporter for the Newark Ledger who covers the lawsuit with actual empathy and ethical integrity, contrasting sharply with the tabloid press. He acts as a composite of the real local and national newsmen who gave the women a genuine voice. In reality, sympathetic journalists worked behind the scenes to connect Grace Fryer with public health advocates like Katherine Wiley and industrial safety experts like Dr. Alice Hamilton.

Dr. Cecil Drinker

Dr. Cecil Kent Drinker (1887–1956) was a Harvard physician and industrial hygienist hired by USRC in 1924 to study the Orange plant. His study concluded that the factory environment was heavily contaminated and causing the workers' illnesses, but USRC suppressed his report and submitted a falsified version to the New Jersey Department of Labor. Upon learning of the deception, Drinker published his original findings independently, providing crucial evidence for the victims. He later helped found Harvard's School of Public Health.

About Angelin

Angelin Vineeth is a freshman at IAE making her theatre debut in Radium Girls. When she isn’t onstage or studying, Angelin stays busy with dance and is a Life Scout in the BSA. In her free time, she’s usually playing with her cat, Hermione (or doomscrolling). She gives a huge thank you to her parents for the incredible amount of time they dedicate to supporting all her extracurriculars!

Diane Roeder

Harriet K. Roeder (née Pupke) (1886–1958) was the wife of Arthur Roeder, the president of the United States Radium Corporation. A figure of upper-class domestic society in 1920s New Jersey, her historical connection to the Radium Girls is defined by her proximity to her husband's business decisions and the dramatic tension between her comfortable lifestyle and the suffering workers. She remained married to Arthur Roeder and lived a private life out of the public eye following the end of the legal scandal. In the play, her name was changed to Diane Roeder to avoid confusion with her daughter, Harriet A. Roeder.

Societywoman

About Nikshitha

Nikshitha Meenraj is very excited to be playing as Mrs. Roeder, Mrs. Michaels, Customer, and Society Woman in the show Radium Girls! She is a senior at IA East for this year, and this will be her first time participating in drama. Outside of school, she volunteers every Saturday and Sunday, and does NOT willingly ingest radium daily like she does in the show. :D

Purvi KulchaniaPurvi Kulchania
Played by Purvi Kulchania

Alma MacNeil

The stern, no-nonsense supervisor of the dialpainters. She enforces company efficiency by demanding the girls point the brushes on their lips to save paint, actively disregarding Dr. Von Sochocky's safety warnings. Ironically and tragically, many of the supervisors of the Radium Girls who enforced the policy also partook in it, ending up with the same conditions as the floor girls themselves.

Venecine Salesman

The Venecine Salesman is a quack vendor who writes Grace about a "herbal" remedy called Venecine, promising it will cure her radiation poisoning if she endorses it for his ads. Venecine was a real-life vegetable juice cure-all pitched directly to the real dying dial painters in newspaper ads during the 1920s. The salesman is modeled on real predatory opportunists who preyed on desperate, terminally ill victims with fake miracle cures.

Board Member #3

The Board Members act as a corporate unit of USRC executives focused entirely on protecting stock prices, stalling lawsuits, and saving face. They mirror the real-life board of the United States Radium Corporation, who pulled out every dirty trick to dodge liability.

About Purvi

Purvi is very excited to make her acting debut in this year’s production of Radium Girls! When she’s not in school, Purvi loves to play piano and read. You can also find her in the Troy High marching band in the spring. Purvi would like to thank her family for all of their support and love!

Anshuman VanamAnshuman Vanam
Played by Anshuman Vanam

Dr. Joseph Knef

Dr. Joseph Knef was a local New Jersey dentist who treated several dial painters, including Amelia Maggia and Grace Fryer, for decaying jawbones. Recognizing that an unprecedented bone disease was attacking these young women, he preserved jaw fragments and initially suspected radiation poisoning, though he briefly sold data to USRC before the trial. He continued practicing dentistry in New Jersey following the trial.

Store Owner

About Anshuman

Anshuman Vanam (Joseph Knef and Store Owner) is thrilled to make his theatrical debut in the drama club's production of Radium Girls. He is a versatile musician, with singing, playing violin, and playing the drums under his belt. When he isn’t on stage, he is either practicing his lines, playing his instruments, or CADing, participating in Scouting and Fire Explorers, or teaching little children how to speak Telugu, his native language. He is honored to join this cast and excited to see how he performs in this play!

Dr. Marie CurieDr. Marie Curie
Sonya GeorgeSonya George
Played by Sonya George

Dr. Marie Curie

Dr. Marie Curie (1867–1934) was the Polish-French physicist and chemist who discovered radium and polonium, winning two Nobel Prizes for her pioneering work in radioactivity. Though she expressed deep sympathy for the Radium Girls when interviewed by American press, she famously noted there was no known way to remove radium once absorbed into human bone. Curie continued her laboratory research in France until dying in 1934 from aplastic anemia caused by her own prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation.

Board Member #1

The Board Members act as a corporate unit of USRC executives focused entirely on protecting stock prices, stalling lawsuits, and saving face. They mirror the real-life board of the United States Radium Corporation, who pulled out every dirty trick to dodge liability.

About Sonya

Sonya is excited to make her appearance in her first play, Radium Girls. When away from school life, she builds models with cardboard and carves wood. She has an interest in pursuing theatre as a hobby and eventually writing a play one day! Sonya would love to thank her family, friends and beloved pets for their support!

Harriet Roeder

Harriet A. Roeder (1915–1991) was the daughter of Arthur Roeder and her mother, also named Harriet Roeder, placing her in New Jersey as a child during the 1920s factory poisoning crisis. As an adult, she pursued an entirely independent career as an American modern dancer and Broadway performer, training under pioneer Hanya Holm and dancing in the original 1943 cast of Oklahoma!. In her later years, she became a dedicated patron of indigenous art, preserving a prominent collection of Southwest Native American pottery that was eventually cataloged by the National Museum of the American Indian.
